Red Sox star Mookie Betts to receive BPAA media award;
Mallory Fritz bowls 704 in Elks; Josh Crawford hits 770 in mixed league
Boston Red Sox star Mookie Betts, after an American League Most Valuable Player season that included earning his first World Series championship ring, also will be honored by the bowling family in late June when he receives the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America Media Award for the significant mass media coverage he has generated for bowling over the past three years.
Betts, an accomplished bowler, participated in the 2015 and 2017 PBA World Series of Bowling in Reno, highlighted by a 300 game he bowled in the 2017 Scorpion Championship. That unique accomplishment led to an onfield presentation of a PBA 300 ring by PBA CEO and Commissioner Tom Clark at a Red Sox game atFenway Park last summer. Ever since he began competing in PBAlevel competition, Betts’ athletic skills as a bowler have accompaniedalmost every media conversation about his talents on television, radio, social media and in newspaper and magazine stories. He also has participated in NBA star Chris Paul’s popular CP3 PBA Celebrity Invitational bowling event that airs on Super Bowl Sunday. Betts will be a participant for the third consecutive year when the 2019 event airs for the first time on FOX on Sunday, Feb. 3, at 2 p.m. Eastern.

• 11th annual Footbowl Championship will be held Feb. 3 at 10 a.m. Trio teams will face off in the event which translates bowling results into touchdowns, field goals and other football scores. Entry fee is $30 per bowler for the handicap event. The format will include a loser’s bracket.
• Spring Madness begins Feb. 4 in the leagues. This is an individual event where bowlers are matched randomly in 32person brackets with winners advancing based on best three out of five games which often spans a twoweek competition. Winners advance, losers are done. Entry fee is $5 per bowler with bowlers using their average from the league they are competing in. They use their league scores in the bracket.
Because the draw is random, bowlers could be facing a teammate or someone else in their league or any other league in the bowling center.
• Sweethear Doubles Tourney will be Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. This event is open to all adult bowlers for a no-tap tournament format where nine pins knocked down on the first ball counts as a strike. Entry fee is $20 per bowler. Handicap is based on 100 percent between entering average and 22o.
